It’s Butterfly Season (pt 1)

It's butterfly season, I'm finding my wings
A good time for leaving behind the old me
Headed for blue skies and lavender fields
Don't know where I'm landing, just know how it feels
When it's time to fly…

A couple of nights ago, God spoke to me clearly as I heard this song for the first time ever. It’s called Butterfly Season by Ella Langley. My sister and I were driving home after grabbing some fresh, warm Krispy Kreme donuts when she turned up the song on her car radio. I was familiar with the artist, but have stayed away from country music more recently. As soon as it started playing, I was hit with a soft and warm emotion inside.

God was confirming something he had told me about a week before.

I’ve never been one to seek out external factors (signs) as confirmation of hearing God’s voice. He usually speaks to me at night in my dreams and also in moments of the day when I’m driving or just talking to him. But…. that’s the beautiful thing about any real relationship. Sometimes he just wants to surprise us. The song on the radio was the third part.

About a week ago, I was at work, just talking quietly to God (as I often do), and he told me that I was like a caterpillar in the cocoon, and that I was about to emerge as a butterfly.

Then, the same day, before we went to get donuts, I had gone through the ATM drive-through at my bank and had pulled over to check my phone in the parking lot before heading back home.

For a moment, I looked up and out the window, and there sitting perfectly still on my side door mirror was a real, live butterfly.

And as soon as I noticed it, it flew away. In that moment, God reminded me of the week before. Of the cocoon. Of his promise. I smiled to myself and was filled with a much-needed hope.

See, this past year has felt like a living hell at times. And at the same time I’ve never felt closer to God. It’s strange and hard to describe.

This thing called healing.

Over the past year I’ve been through moments that would have completely taken some people out. Physically, spiritually, emotionally.

But…I included God in the story. I allowed him to become real to me in ways I haven’t truly known in the past. So dear friend, as you are reading this, please note that the following blogs and notes are meant to be a sort of diary, if you will.

Some of you reading this may already know me from my books or perhaps my ventures in the world of film. Or, you might be totally new here. Either way, I’m glad to have you join me on this adventure!

In the near future, I will likely just share whatever is on my heart and perhaps some real-life stories too. I hope you’ll grab your favorite beverage (mine is coffee!) and learn and grow and laugh with me.

For that is the hardest, and most precious lesson I have learned in the past year- that the best moments in life can mean nothing if you do not have anyone to share and celebrate them with. So, until next time, friend, cheers.
